What Do Altar Servers Do?
Altar Servers assist the priest and help create a reverent atmosphere during Mass. They carry the cross and candles in procession, hold the Roman Missal for the priest, assist in preparing the altar, present the bread, wine, and water, help with the handwashing (lavabo), and ring the bells at the consecration. Their quiet, prayerful presence helps the Mass flow smoothly and invites the congregation into deeper prayer.
What Is a Master of Ceremonies (MC)?
An MC is a senior altar server who takes on a leadership role during more solemn liturgies and special celebrations. At Holy Name of Jesus, the MC role is reserved for adult male servers or experienced young adults who show maturity, leadership, and a deep reverence for the Mass. This tradition reflects the Church’s long-standing emphasis on forming future leaders and encouraging priestly vocations. Many who serve as MCs grow in spiritual maturity and begin to discern a call to the priesthood.
Why Serve?
Serving at the altar helps deepen a young person’s love for Jesus in the Eucharist. It also builds confidence, discipline, and a strong sense of responsibility. Altar servers grow in teamwork and attentiveness, while MCs are offered unique opportunities for leadership and spiritual formation.
Who Can Join?
Any Catholic youth who has received First Communion, demonstrates reverence, and is willing to learn is welcome to become an altar server. At Holy Name, both boys and girls are encouraged to serve. The MC role, however, remains reserved for older male servers, in keeping with Church tradition and our parish’s emphasis on encouraging priestly vocations through this special role.
